What Do You Experience
The tours at the Robben Island Monument depart at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00, and 15:00. The Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V and A Waterfront is where the ferries depart from. The tour lasts three and a half hours, including the ferry ride to and from the island (depending on the boat used as they have different travel times). You will disembark at Murray's Bay Harbour on the island's east coast, where you can walk a short distance to find buses that will take you to all of the historical sites. You will pass by buildings and a tall wall that was constructed in the 1960s by prisoners as you make your way to the buses. The structures were utilized for prisoner visits by family members and attorneys. When you get on the buses, you'll meet your tour guide. An official Robben Island Tour Guide will lead the tour of the prison. This is a component of our integrated tour model. They are fully conversant with and knowledgeable about the 500-year-old, complex history of the Island. The tour route includes the leprosy graveyard, the Lime Quarry, Robert Sobukwe's home, the Bluestone quarry, the army and navy bunkers, and the Maximum Security Prison, where thousands of South Africa's freedom fighters were imprisoned for years. The tour ends with a visit to Nelson Mandela's cell.
